About the instructors

1. Derek Bruff

 Derek Bruff is the senior professor in the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics and the head of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching. He manages the Center’s programs and activities for graduate learners as well as instructors, assisting them in gaining fundamental teaching abilities and in exploring cutting-edge concepts in teaching and learning. In an effort to promote a university culture that fosters good teaching, he also often interacts with campus officials about pedagogical difficulties. Research interests of Bruff’s include social pedagogies, visual thinking, and educational technologies. His book, Teaching using Classroom Response Systems: Designing Active Learning surroundings, was released by Jossey-Bass in 2009. He writes about these subjects at derekbruff.org. Bruff has a math Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and has taught at Harvard University.

2. Henry (Rique) Campa

At Michigan State University (MSU), Henry (Rique) Campa is a professor of ecology of wildlife. This is also in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and an Associate Dean in the Graduate School. He creates, executes, and assesses career and professional growth programs. These are linked to MSU’s PREP (Planning, Resilience, Participation, and Professionalism) program in his capacity as an Associate Dean. He also oversees MSU’s participation in the CIRTL (Center for the Integration of Studies, Teaching, and Learning) Network, which is sponsored by the NSF. Wildlife-habitat connections, managing ecosystems, the consequences of perturbations on wildlife, and the advancement of graduate education are among Rique’s research specialties. Rique has produced around $18M in research grants since 1990. He has carried out ecological study throughout the United States, as well as in Kenya and Nepal. Rique formerly had positions as a wildlife biologist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before joining MSU. Rique is a Certified Wildlife Biologist with The Wildlife Society (TWS). And he has held leadership roles for TWS at the national, regional, and state levels. Rique teaches undergraduate classes and has previously instructed courses of study in the Bahamas and Kenya.
